Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2025
TaxLaidOut (“we”, “us”) is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about what we do — and just as importantly, what we don’t do — with your information. This policy is written to meet our obligations under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and our marketing-consent obligations under PECR (the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations).
What data we collect and why
We keep data collection to the absolute minimum needed to run the service:
| Data | Purpose | Lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | To send you the tax-deadline reminders, tips and updates you sign up for. | Consent (PECR). You must actively tick the opt-in box; we never pre-tick it. |
| Page-view logs (path, timestamp, user agent) | First-party analytics and security (understanding which pages are used, detecting abuse). | Legitimate interests. We process only the minimal data above, with no third-party tracker. |
| Form inputs for the checker & calculator | To run our calculations and show you a result in your current session only. | Not applicable — these inputs are not stored anywhere, so no personal data is persisted. |
The checker and calculator work entirely in your session: the figures you enter are used to produce your result and are then discarded. We do not save them to a database, a file, or any third-party service.
Lawful bases (summary)
- Consent — for marketing emails. You can withdraw consent at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email or by contacting us.
- Legitimate interests — for first-party page-view analytics and security.
- Contract — providing the free checker and calculator tools you request.
Retention
- Email addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Once you unsubscribe, your address is removed from our mailing list.
- Analytics logs (page views) are kept for a maximum of 12 months, after which they are automatically deleted.
- Checker and calculator inputs are never retained.
Cookies
We do not use tracking cookies. We do not use any third-party analytics, advertising or tracking services. The only cookies we may set are strictly necessary for the website to function (for example, to remember your session). You can browse and use every tool without accepting any non-essential cookies.
No third-party trackers or analytics
TaxLaidOut does not embed third-party trackers. We do not use Google Analytics, advertising networks, social-media pixels, or similar. Our page-view logging is entirely first-party.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data.
- Erasure — ask us to delete your data (for example, unsubscribe and remove your email).
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data in certain circumstances.
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
- Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interests or for marketing.
To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@taxlaidout.co.uk. We will respond within one month.
Complaints
If you are not happy with how we handle your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator. You can make a complaint at https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/. We would, however, appreciate the chance to address your concerns first.
