Who's behind TaxLaidOut

TaxLaidOut is built and run by Colin Ellis, founder of All One Planet Ltd (Company No. 11017373), based in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Even my dad — a former tax collector turned Tax Consultant — says today's tax rules are overly burdensome. After my nerve-wracking journey of starting side hustles to get off benefits, I realised how much we need a simple, jargon-free way to see our profit and tax laid out clearly. Alongside my charity work supporting people with anxiety, I built this software to take the fear out of tax so you always know exactly where you stand.

What TaxLaidOut is — and isn't

TaxLaidOut is a rules engine, not a person giving advice. Every figure the calculators and guides show comes from HMRC and gov.uk sources, coded into the engine and re-checked against the source pages.

It is general information, not tax advice. Your own situation may have details the rules don't cover — an accountant looks at your whole position; we make sure you know the rules and your real profit.

How every figure is verified

  1. One primary source per rule. Each threshold (the £1,000 trading allowance, the £6,000 personal-possession limit, platform reporting rules) is coded from its gov.uk page — linked at the bottom of every guide and calculator.
  2. Dated verification. Tax rules carry a "last verified" date — tax rules were last verified 2026-09-21. When a source changes, the date changes; if a figure has no date, treat that as a bug and tell us.
  3. Same engine everywhere. The guides, calculators, checker and llms.txt are generated from the same rules code — figures can't drift between pages.

Spotted something wrong?

Email hello@taxlaidout.co.uk. Corrections are checked against the gov.uk source and shipped the same week — and the verified date on the affected page is updated when they are.
